Fumigation or gasification is a pest control method of insecticide used if dealing with grain or other raw material (cocoa beans, coffee beans, other grain, etc.) contaminated with insects. Fumigation may be performed also in flourmills and empty storehouses. The only requirement for fumigation in flourmills and empty storehouses is that the rooms have to be hermetical. A fumigant is a very dangerous and poisonous gas, which penetrates into the treatable mass and destroys insects in all their development phases.
Only specially trained people, having a corresponding certificate, may carry out fumigation. Detia Degesch GmbH carried out this special training for the employees of Faminer OÜ and issued the required certificate. Faminer OÜ performs fumigation in storehouses, silos, harbours, ships, and containers. Upon fumigation the right fumigant has to be used because besides insecticide it may also affect the treated food and fodder. Naturally, the goods should not be spoilt in any way and important features like germinative capacity, looks and smell, taste, grinding and baking qualities should be preserved. Tests show that the gas (phosphine) emitted from the products of Detia Degesch meets all these requirements. Even seedcom and other seeds may be fumigated with phosphine.

Phosphine releases fumigants via the impact of air humidity, humidity of the treated products and proper temperature. This gas is very toxic to all living beings.

The chemical formula of phosphine is PH3, which is an odourless and colourless gas, with a sharp warning smell added.

Instructions for usage:
Different situations require different dosage of the substance:
a) a slightly higher dosage is recommended in cooler and drier conditions or in conditions where the covering period is considerably short.

b) the second major factor in dosing is the requirement to make the rooms hermetical in order to perform fumigation of the goods.

In certain fumigation processes dosage is relevant to spread the gas on different levels evenly and guarantee lethal concentration.
For example: fumigating high grain elevators (silos in which the grain layer is 25-30 m), where the fumigant cannot be spread evenly in all layers and is applied only in the upper part results in poor fumigant distribution and inadequate effect.
